Borg Ewsum
Borg Ewsum in Middelstum is a historic estate with a rich history, tracing back to the Ewsum family. The name "Ewsum" also appears in the history of Borg Nienoord, as the family owned the manor until 1610. After this period, the manor frequently changed owners, experiencing both times of prosperity and times of hardship.
In the fifteenth century, the region faced threats from the Burgundians, prompting Onno van Ewsum to construct a gun tower. This tower is still visible on the estate today, although it is believed to have been altered over time. Later owners are thought to have lowered the tower and reused the materials to build a new tower on the manor.
In 1863, the owner decided to demolish the manor and coach house due to severe decay. What remains today are the preserved gun tower and the eastern treasure house. Where the manor once stood, nature has reclaimed the land, with beautiful weeping willows now covering the area.
